T21RS Members Initiatives 2024
A major mission of T21RS is to support the education, training and research of the next generation of researchers interested in Down syndrome. This includes researchers at early stages of their career moving into the field of DS. To advance this mission, it is our pleasure to announce three initiatives to promote scientific and clinical exchange and support early/new investigators. Applications should be sent to secretariatecnicat21rs@
Looking forward to reviewing your interest.

Scientific Exchanges
Up to a total of 15,000 EUR in scholarships per year.
This program would build the skills of early-career investigators and collaborations between existing labs focused on DS. Under this initiative an early-career investigator and, if applicable their mentor, would propose a visit to another lab to gain expertise, launch a collaboration or some other activity that would enhance the young investigator’s work in DS. The application would briefly lay out the plan for the visit, including statements of support and agreement by the mentor and the PI of the lab to be visited. The expected benefits would be clearly stated. A report of progress made during the visit is required at its completion. A budget to cover the cost of travel and lodging, up to a maximum of 5,000 EUR, would be allowed. All proposals would be reviewed by a committee of T21RS members whose participation would be solicited by the Executive Committee. Up to a total of 15,000 EUR in scholarships per year.

Support for Early/New Investigators
Up to a total of 3 grants per year for a total of 10,000 EUR.
To support early-stage and new investigators, pilot projects to allow successful candidates to acquire reagents and other items important for completing preliminary studies whose results would support applications for funding from other entities – e.g. foundations, public grants, etc. Applicants would hold full time positions at an academic research center. Applications would spell out the hypothesis and specific aims of the work, define any other funding available for the study, and define clearly how T21RS funding would enable the work to be done. The expected benefits and plans for follow-on funding would be clearly stated. A report of progress would be required at the project completion. Funding requests would be held to a maximum of 10,000 EUR. All proposals would be reviewed by a committee of T21RS members whose participation would be solicited by the Executive Committee. Up to a total of 3 grants per year for a total of 10,000 EUR

Support for Knowledge Exchange visits
Up to a total of 15,000 EUR in scholarships per year.
This program primarily aims to help fundamental, translational, and clinical researchers to familiarize themselves with everyday health and social issues experienced by individuals who have DS. Fundamental, translational, and clinical researchers will identify and contact Clinics or Clinical Research groups that specialize in the needs of people who have DS (T21RS list of contacts), in their home country if possible. In cases in which no suitable Clinical host is available in the investigator’s home country, a host in a different country can be approached (with full justification of the choice of the host to be outlined in the application). Together, the investigator and the Clinical Lead/Director for the hosting organization will draft an activity plan to include scientific and career benefits and submit it to T21RS for consideration. Clinical researchers can also make use of this program as a means to update their recruiting and testing procedures in an effort to harmonize practices among different clinical research groups.
Members of the clinical and preclinical committees may help to facilitate these interactions if requested. A report of the outcomes and benefits of the visit would be required at its completion, to be submitted within 1-month. A budget to cover the cost of travel and lodging, up to a maximum of 5,000 EUR, would be allowed. All proposals would be reviewed by a committee of T21RS members whose participation would be solicited by the Executive Committee. Up to a total of 15,000 EUR in scholarships per year.
