The establishment of the T21RS in 2014 marked a milestone in Down syndrome research as the international community reached critical mass for the next step in this research field. As one of the most complex genetic challenges compatible with human survival past term, understanding the underlying mechanisms of Down syndrome can seem daunting. This makes recent advances in understanding that have led to recent robust clinical trials all the more amazing. Communication is the key to continuing the truly remarkable progress in a condition that most of the senior members of the Trisomy 21 Research Society have heard referred to as “not possible to treat”, “too complex to understand in a meaningful way” over the decades.
